New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi did not start A-Rod as precaution to prevent recurring problem

No need to panic, Yankees fans. Alex Rodriguez's calf is just fine.
Joe Girardi didn't start the third baseman Tuesday night against the Orioles, wanting to make sure the injury that cost A-Rod most of the past three weeks would not become a recurring problem.
Rodriguez said he pleaded his case in three nfl jerseys
separate conversations between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, but Girardi's mind was made up.
A-Rod, who reached on a fielder's choice as a pinch-hitter in the seventh, played two games after returning from the disabled list, going 3-for-7 with a home run and three RBI. Girardi said he wasn't alarmed by anything to make him sit Rodriguez Tuesday night, but he decided to play it safe and give the third baseman most of a day off.
"Having three weeks off and then going and playing two days without really doing a rehab, I just felt the one thing I don't want is him to be a little bit fatigued at this time and then go out and injure something," Girardi said.
CY YOUNG FOR CC?
CC Sabathia saw his 21-start home unbeaten string snapped Tuesday night after going 6 1/3 innings and giving up five earned run, missing his opportunity to become the majors' first 20-game winner. Still, CC remains a leading candidate to win his second Cy Young award.
With Seattle's Felix Hernandez, Boston's Clay Buchholz and Tampa's David Price posing the biggest threats to Sabathia, Girardi said he knows who would get his vote at season's end.
"I think you have to look at the numbers," Girardi said. "I also think you have to look at ballparks players pitch in, divisions they pitch in, you have to look at all of it - the amount of wins, innings, hits per innings. Felix Hernandez has had a great year and we've seen enough of him, I'll tell you that. (He went 3-0 against the Yankees this season), but I think our guy has had an amazing year as well."
Sabathia still leads the majors in wins (19), is tied for seventh in the AL in ERA (3.14) is second in the league in innings pitched (209.0) and seventh in strikeouts (170).
By comparison, Hernandez owns an 11-10 record for a Minnesota Vikings jersey
dreadful Seattle club, but is second in the AL in ERA (2.30), first in strikeouts (209) and first in innings pitched (219.1). Buchholz leads the AL in ERA (2.25) and is tied for sixth with 15 wins. Price is second with 17 wins and is fourth in ERA (2.87).
"Right now if I was to vote, it would be for CC," Girardi said.
LANCE A LOT
Lance Berkman has put his slow start as a Yankee and an ankle injury behind him. The DH went 3-for-4 Tuesday night and is 8-for-16 since coming off the DL on Sept.1. His ankle looked fine as he scored from first on a fifth-inning double by Jorge Posada. Berkman regained his balance after nearly stumbling around third and slid in safely on a close play at home.
"That was quite an adventure," he said. "It wasn't the smoothest (270) feet, but I got in there. Tough yardage."
TAKING NOTICE
Derek Jeter is impressed with the suddenly resurgent Orioles. Left for dead long ago this season, the Birds have been playing inspired ball under new manager Buck Showalter.
"They're playing well," Jeter said after the Orioles won their second straight game against the Bombers. "I don't know because I've never switched managers in the middle of a season, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of guys over there trying to make an impression. They've been playing well."
Since Showalter took over on Aug. 3, the Orioles are 21-13. They have won six and tied one of their last 11 series. They had won just four series all season prior to Showalter.

Kerry Wood pitched out of a jam in the seventh. Entering with one out, one run already in and runners at the corners, he fanned Ty Wigginton and Adam Jones.
